Five essential tips for hiking, trekking or hiking

Hiking is one of the best ways to connect with nature, stay active, and explore breathtaking landscapes. However, to fully enjoy the experience and avoid mishaps, it's important to be well-prepared. If you're planning a mountain adventure, here are five key tips to help you hike safely and comfortably.

1. Hiking poles

At first glance, walking sticks might seem like they're only for the elderly or people with limited mobility, but they're actually an essential tool for any hiker. They not only help you navigate obstacles and provide support on uneven terrain, but they also reduce the strain on your legs, allowing you to walk longer without excessive fatigue. By distributing your weight between your arms and legs, walking sticks lessen the impact on your joints and improve your stability on challenging terrain.

2. Appropriate footwear

Many people use the same sneakers they wear to the gym for hiking, but this is a mistake. Shoes designed for hiking have specific features that make them ideal for this type of activity. I recommend hiking boots, as they provide greater ankle support, which is essential when walking on uneven terrain, reducing the risk of sprains. In addition, their soles have exceptional grip that prevents slipping on technical surfaces. Another key point is waterproofing: keeping your feet dry is essential to avoid blisters and discomfort during the hike.

3. Hydration system

Choosing a hydration pack is one of the best decisions you can make for hiking. They're much more convenient than carrying water bottles in your hand, as they allow you to stay hydrated without interrupting your progress. A common mistake is underestimating the distance or effort of the hike; you never know if you might get lost or suffer heatstroke, and having enough water can make all the difference.

4. Specialized stockings

A blister can completely ruin your adventure, so choosing quality socks is essential. I recommend merino wool socks, a breathable, thermoregulating, and extremely comfortable material. Many brands also offer a lifetime guarantee due to their durability. For even greater comfort, look for socks with "extra cushioning," as they provide additional shock absorption and a feeling similar to walking on clouds.

5. Appropriate outdoor clothing

Wearing the right clothing can make a big difference to your comfort and protection. A good jersey with UV protection that's breathable and quick-drying is key for facing any weather. Also, I always recommend choosing pants over shorts. While shorts might seem cooler, pants offer better protection against scratches, insects, and temperature changes. If you choose a lightweight, stretchy material, you won't have any issues with overheating or restricted movement.

Extra tip: Safety first

Always keep your phone fully charged and, if possible, use a GPS watch like a Garmin or Polar to record your routes and find your way in case of emergency. Safety is paramount on any adventure.

With these tips, you'll be ready to fully enjoy hiking! Which of these tips do you already use on your hikes?
